3Newspaper Obituary, D&G Standard 19 Jul 1854.
"THE LATE Rev. WILLIAM REIVE of NORTH SHIELDS,
In our obituary last week, we announced the death of this able young minister, at his father's house, Auchanroddan, Applegarth. A gentleman, well acquainted with the deceased, writes as follows respecting him :- His college course was distinguished by more than the average success of students. His talents and general requirements were of a very high order indeed, and did not fail, on fitting occasion, to call forth the approbation of his professors in the literary and theological classes which he attended while a student at the University and New College of Edinburgh. The members of the Presbytery of Lockerbie, by which he was licensed to preach the gospel, were particularly struck with his sound, extensive, and matured views of divine truth upon all the principal doctrines of Calvinism. It was evident that he was a thorough student of the word of God: we have reason to believe that it was the man of his counsel: it was his study all the day, and it afforded him sweet meditation in the night-watches. His success in the gospel ministry during his brief pastorate over the Scotch Church, North Shields, was observable in the rapid increase of the congregation, the deep and ever increasing attachment of his flock to his ministry, and in the extinction of nearly L.800 of debt on their property within a year from his ordination as their pastor. We have reason to believe that a great religious movement had begun among his people before his illness deprived them of his services. Arrested by an attack of bronchitis, from the effects of which he never rallied, he spent the winter months at the Isle of Wight and Jersey respectively, and returned home in April last, in the hope that he might be able partially to resume duty: but the climate of North Shields only aggravated his complaint. He then sought health in the pure and bracing atmosphere of his native place, when the summons of death was put into his hand, and when he was called from the toils and trials of the church-militant to the rest and triumphs of the upper temple, where the weary are at rest, and where the wicked cease from troubling, There, at his father's residence, the rupture of a blood vessel drained him, within a short week, of his life's-blood, and terminated his useful and hopeful career. His Iast illness was marked by a calm tranquillity of soul, humbly trusting on Jesus as all his salvation and all his desire. He departed this life (to quote his own dying words). . ‘not as one making or having to make up his peace with God, but no one who long since had set to his seal that God is true, by believing on his Son Jesus Christ.’ He breathed his meek soul into the hands of his beloved Saviour, in the presence of his distressed wife and parents, brothers and sisters, who are left behind to mourn over the death of one of the most tender husbands, dutiful sons, and affectionate brothers. This afflicted people also can bear testimony to his pains taking and devoted ministry. His whole public duties as a minister of the gospel were discharged with a solemn and awful sense of the responsibility under which he was placed to God for the souls committed to his care. In the death of this young minister of Christ, the congregation and town of North Shields, together with Presbyterianism in England, have sustained a heavy loss, which will be difficult to repair."

4Newspaper Obituary, EnglishPresbyterianMessenger 1854.
"WE have, this month, the painful duty of recording the death of the Rev. William Reive, of North Shields,-a young and promising labourer in the vineyard of Christ, cut down in the beginning of his days! We believe it is less than two years since he became a preacher of the Gospel; but he laboured faithfully and with much acceptance during his brief sojourn, and those who knew him best now mourn his loss most deeply. In consequence of his removal, the Presbytery of Newcastle met in the church at North Shields, on the 5th of July, when a minute was prepared, to be entered on the records, expressive of their views on the solemn occasion. In the absence of other particulars of Mr. Reive's illness and death, we deeply regret our inability to give that minute entire; but we believe it was, in substance, that-The Presbytery view with deep solemnity the dealings of God in so early removing from the work of the ministry a labourer so eminently qualified by gifts and graces, of the loss sustained by the Church at large, and especially by the congregation at North Shields,-of the sorrow and disappointment felt by the members, to whom this young brother had endeared himself by his amiability, and whose expectations of his future usefulness and eminence had been highly raised by his transparent candour, remarkable singleness of purpose ; by his talents, acquirements, and conscientious diligence in study and preaching-all sanctified by a decided but unostentatious piety.
It was remarked by the Moderator (the Rev. Dr. Paterson) that the feelings of the brethren were not all of sorrow. That in looking on the past all remembrance of the deceased was very pleasant, that the hope concerning him now was very bright; and that it was a thing to be desired and envied -to finish so soon and so successfully the course.
A copy of the minute, embodying such sentiments, was directed to be sent to the bereaved widow and parents. The Presbytery also agreed to record their cordial satisfaction with the conduct of the North Shields congregation, in that they had so generously and liberally made arrangements which gave their sick pastor all the relief and solace possible in the circumstances.
The members of Presbytery severally expressed the esteem and affection in which they held the memory of their deceased brother; Mr. Duncan was appointed to preach at North Shields on the ensuing Sabbath, and declare the church vacant; and it was understood that, at the request of the Session, he would improve the solemn occasion by suitable and appropriate services."
