"Since our last issue there passed away one of our most respected townsmen in the person of Mr James Wares, saddler.... Mr Wares was 57 years of age. He was the eldest surviving son of the late well-known Mr Alexander Wares, vintner, Pulteneytown. Having learned the saddlery trade with his maternal grandfather, the late Mr James Dallas, he afterwards went to Edinburgh, where he worked for some time. More than thirty years ago he returned to Wick and commenced on his own account the business which has since successfully carried on. He had also a drapery business in Pulteneytown, which is managed by Mrs Wares.... He is survived by his wife, an Edinburgh lady, and a family of five sons and seven daughters......"

Following the official notification which Mr. R. G. McNiven this week received from the Minister of Defence, to the effect that the Court of Inquiry had reported his son, Cecil, to be missing, he having been previously reported wounded, Mr McNiven yesterday received through a private channel authentic news of his son's death. This was contained in a letter addressed by Rfm. A. T. Murray to Miss G. Fargie, of Cameron St., Aramoho, which contained the following passage : " I am sending you some photographs I found in Cecil McNiven's paybook. He was killed in action on the 15th September, the day we advanced on the Somme. He is buried on the hill facing Flers, the place we captured the day we advanced. Please hand the photographs to Mr. McNiven." The citizens of Wanganui will deeply sympathise with Mr. and Mrs. McNiven and family in the sorrow which has come to them on the eve of Christmas. Cecil McNiven was a young man of promising attainments. He was educated at the District High (Avenue) School and the Wanganui Collegiate School, and, adopting law as his profession, he was' at the time of his enlistment a junior in the office of Messrs. T. M. Wilford and Levi, Wellington, at the same time carrying on his studies as a student of Victoria College. He was 22 years of age."
