106. Ann DALLAS

1Newspaper Obituary, Western Daily Advocate Sat 14 May 1904.
"Death of Mrs Hartland (nee Dallas) - We very much regret the death of Mrs W T Hartland, which occurred this afternoon a few minutes after 2 o'clock, the cause being pernicious anaemia, which malady is, we are glad to understand comparatively rare. She had been suffering for about 12 months, but had been able to get around fairly well until recently, and about 3 weeks since had to take to her bed. She leaves a sorrowing husband and three daughters (Mrs Lapham, Mrs F Spratt and a younger daughter). Mrs Hartland was only 54 years old but was apparently a very strong woman, but the illness that carried her off is very insidious in its effects. She had resided here for about 37 years and it was in Orange that she married. The internment will take place this afternoon. The funeral leaving her residence in Autumn St, Orange at 2.30pm for Wesleyan Cemetery, Orange."

2Newspaper Obituary, Leader Orange Sat 14 May 1904.

Death took place yesterday afternoon, at her residence from blood poisoning. The deceased lady, who was 54 years of age, was a native of the State, and had resided in Orange for upwards of 30 years, her husband being an alderman of East Orange. She was an active worker in the Congregational Church, and had also taken a deep interest in temperance work, having been one of the first members of the Ark of Safety temperance lodge, established about 27 years ago. She leaves a husband and two daughters (Mrs. F. Spratt and Mrs. C. Lapham) to mourn their loss. Her remains will be interred in the Wesleyan cemetery this afternoon; the Rev. A. Castlemau, B.A., will officiate at the grave. The cortege will leave the house at 2.30 o'clock. The Foresters, of which order Mr. Hartland is one of the oldest members, will march in regalia. "NONAGENARIAN'S DEATH.
ORANGE, Friday
The death has occurred of Mr. William Thomas Hartland, one of the town's oldest residents, at the age of 94. He was a native of Taunton, England, and after serving on a man-o'-war for some time, came to Orange nearly 70 years ago. At one time he was an alderman of the old East Orange Council, and , one of the oldest members of Court Little John, Ancient Order of Foresters

He was actually only eighty-five (nearly eighty-six}."

4Newspaper Obituary, Leader Orange Wed 10 Jan 1934.
"OBITUARY.
MR. W. T. HARTLAND.
Few residents of Orange could claim to have been domiciled in the town or to have attained the great age of Mr. William Thomas Hartland, who passed away at 8.20 a.m. yesterday, at the residence of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lapham, in Byng Street, Orange East, at the age of 94 years. He had been confined to his bed by illness for only a week, bronchial pneumonia supervening upon weakness caused by his age and bringing about his de-mise. A few months ago Mr. Hartland was in the Orange Hospital with his first illness, which was expected to prove fatal, but he overcame that. A native of Taunton, Somersetshire, England, he ran away to sea at the age of 17, and served in a man-o'-war, later coming to Orange, where, at the age of 27 he was married to Miss Annie Dallas, aunt of the late Frank Dallas. Mrs. Hartland died about 26 years ago. In his early days at Orange deceased worked at Hawke's mills, Frederick's Valley, and later at Bowen's tannery. He later reverted to the trade of painting, taught him by his father, and with few interruptions he remained at this occupation until less than 20 years ago. At one time—between 30 and 40 years ago he conducted a fruit shop in Summer Street, and another such business in the old mill which stood where the Strand Theatre now is. Until the last few years of his life, Mr. Hartland was a very active man. That he took interest in his town's affairs is shown by the fact that he was for a period an alderman of the old East Orange municipality, which was merged into the municipality of Orange in 1912. One of the oldest members of Court Little John, he was a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters for over 50 years, and members the society will march at his funeral to-day. Deceased left two daughters — Mrs. C. Lapham, of Orange, and Mrs. F. Spratt, of Griffith — and 30 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. The remains will be interred in the Methodist portion of the Orange cemetery to-day, the cortege leaving the residence at 3 p.m. Mrs. F. Ford and Sons will conduct the mortuary arrangements."

Following a lengthy illness, the death occurred at St. John of God Hospital this morning of Mr. Roger ("Rody") Horan, a well-known Goulburn figure. The late Mr. Horan was 77 years of age and had been a resident of this city practically the whole of his life.
He became ill eight months ago and had been an inmate of St. John of God Hospital ever since. Born in Tiperary County, Ireland, he came to Australia at the age of two years with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs Thomas Horan. As a young man he learnt the bootmaking trade, being apprenticed to a Goulburn bootmaking firm, and for several years followed this occupation.
He was a member of G. Company of the old Goulburn Volunteers, which was one of the first military units formed in Goulburn, and was a recipient of the Long Service Medal. He enlisted for the Soudan War, but received his discharge before leaving Australia.
While encamped at Liverpool during military manoeuvres he was knocked down by a horse. His spine was injured and he becnme paralysed, and after a month's treatment in St. Vincent's Hospital he was sent back to Goulburn as incurable. After five years confinement in bed he made what was regarded as a remarkable recovery, but was unable to do laborious work and devoted the rest of his life to collecting for charitable institutions.
It is stated that during his life he collected thousands of pounds for the orphanages and other institutions. He lived for many years in Victoria Street, later acquiring a property in Clifford Street, where he took up residence.
A life-long friend paying a tribute to the late Mr. Horan to-day described him as a most industrious, honest and sober man, whose life was a pattern to all those abound him. He was a member of the Hibernian Holy Name and St. Vincent de Paul Societies.
He is survived by a widow, six daughters and one son - Mesdames Pierce (Sydney), Krausharr (Sydney), O. Martin (Sydney), Fay (Newcastle), McCallum (Sydney) and Miss M. Horan (Goulburn) and Mr. Percy Horan (Goulburn)."

"Mrs. Ruth Smith
Forbes lost one of its oldest and most highly esteemed residents on Saturday morning, when Mrs. Ruth Smith (aged 82), relict of the late Mr. Harry Smith, of Wombat Street, passed away in the District Hospital. The old lady entered hospital about three weeks ago, and was discharged about a week before her death. However, it was found necessary to readmit her the following morning. Pneumonia was the immediate cause of her death. It was a coincidence that she died on the anniversary of her husband's death four years ago. For 25 years she had been a nurse in the district. The late Mrs. Smith, who had been a resident of the district for about 55 years, leaves a family of three daughters — Mrs. B.
