353. Francis James DALLAS

1Newspaper Obituary, Goulburn Evening Penny Post Tues 27 Sept 1932.
"The death occurred at Orange last week of Mr Frank Dallas, aged 65, a former Goulburn resident.
He was one of the keenest bandsman in Orange and was very popular with a large section of the Public. His constant efforts for the good of the Orange Band, of which he had been a member since he went to Orange 30 years ago, had been partly responsible for the success of that organisation.
The late Mr Dallas was a native of Goulburn, and during his boyhood went to New Zealand, where he remained for some time gum-digging. He returned to Goulburn and entered Gillespie's boot factory, where he remained for a number of years. In 1902 he moved to Orange and carried on business there as a bootmaker until 1916, when he entered into partnership with Mr J Lippold as a pastrycook.
He was a member of a family which had wonderful musical talent. At one time he was one of the well known "Dallas Band" in Goulburn, composed almost entirely of members of the family. His musical prowess eventually led him to tour the whole of the Commonwealth, New Zealand and Fiji Islands. He was an expert player of the euphonium and tenor horn, winning many prizes, and also at times played the trombone.
He leaves a widow, three daughters, one brother and two sisters."

"Mr F Dallas, Jnr, a prominent member of the Liedertafel orchestra, in which he played the euphonium, has left Goulburn. The society is forwarding to him a smoker's companion containing four splendid pipes. The letter accompanying the presentation is as follows:
Goulburn, August 10th 1907. to Mr Frank Dallas Jnr, Bowral. Dear Sir, your fellow members in the Liedertafel felt that they could not permit you to depart from Goulburn, without conveying to you their genuine appreciation of your many years loyal services and splendid work in the interests of our society. The ability that you have ever displayed, and the constant support you have given since the very inception of the orchestra, and even when that body was a very incomplete organisation, cannot be overlooked, and we especially regret that you have to leave us almost on the eve of the most important effort we have so far attempted. Your complete mastery of your instrument, and your general knowledge of music and orchestra work, have been of great value to us in many ways. We trust you will accept the accompanying present as a little memento of your past associations with the members of the Goulburn Liedertafel. Wishing you every possible prosperity and good luck in your new home, yours very sincerely (on behalf of the members) Walter W Thorman (conductor), W F Jones (leader of orchestra), W S Foxall (chairman, Leo Hunt (sec)."

2Newspaper Obituary, Riverine Grazier, Friday 9 Oct 1936.
"OBITUARY. MR. FRANK DALLAS

We regret to have to report that Mr. Frank Dallas, assistant Town Clerk, died at about 5 a.m. today in the Hay Hospital, following an operation for gall-stone trouble. We understand that Mr. Dallas had been suffering from this disability for some time, but he had always refused to undergo an operation, which he was advised would be of benefit. He had been unable to follow his calling for the past fortnight, and had made application for holidays. Yesterday his condition became very much worse, and he was taken to the Hay Hospital where the operation offered the only means of prolonging the patient's life. This was duly performed, but unfortunately it had been left too late. Mr. Dallas was a native of Goulburn, and came to Hay from that place in the beginning of 1912 when he was the successful applicant for the position of caretaker of the billiard room at the Hay Athenaeum. He rendered good service to that institution, but he was more congenially placed as a clerk, and he entered the employ of the Municipal Council as office assistant at the end of June, 1914; and remained there until his death. He was a most methodical, accurate, competent and courteous, official, and in his capacity as assistant clerk he came in contact with a great many of the ratepayers and citizens of Hay. The Council has never been better served than it was by Mr. Dallas, nor the public rendered more willing and cheerful assistance. The Town Clerk, aldermen and public will all greatly miss him, and it will not be easy to find some one to fill his place, who will do so so painstakingly and unobtrusively. His main recreation was as a bandsman, in which capacity he was very competent and very reliable. Old bandsmen will greatly regret his passing. The deceased gentleman was twice married, and his second wife and three sons and a daughter survive him. He also leaves a married daughter by his first marriage, who resides at Port Kembla. The funeral will take place at noon to-morrow."

3Newspaper Obituary, Goulburn Evening Penny Post 21 Oct 1936.
"Mr Frank Dallas - The death occurred recently at Hay, where he held the position of Deputy Town Clerk, of Mr Frank (Dick) Dallas. A native of Goulburn, Francis moved to Hay in early 1912, when he was appointed caretaker of the billiard room at the Hay Athenaeum. He gave good service to that institution, but he was more congenially placed as a clerk, and he entered the employ of the Municipal Council as office assistant at the end of June, 1914 and had remained there until his death.
He was a most methodical, accurate, competent and courteous officer, and in his capacity as assistant clerk he came into contact with a great many of the ratepayers and citizens of Hay, all of whom held him in high regard. His main recreation was as a bandsman.
The late Mr Dallas was twice married, and his second wife, together with three sons and a daughter, survive him. He also leaves by his first marriage, a daughter, Mrs S Reeson, who resides at Port Kembla. He is also survived by his mother Mrs F Dallas, Port Kembla and two brothers, Alex (Sydney) and Bert (Wauchope). Although it took place at the busiest hour of Saturday morning, there was a good attendance of townspeople at the funeral. The cortege, which moved from St Paul's
pro-Cathedral, where a short service was held, was headed by the Hay Citizen's Band. The bandsman played the "Funeral March" and at the cemetery formed a guard of honour. At the close of the burial service, conducted by Rev. Canon Thompson, the band played "Abide with me", the late Mr Dallas' favourite hymn.
Many floral tributes were received, including wreaths from the Mayor, Mayoress, Alderman and staff of the Hay Municipal Council and the Citizen's Band."

364. Lydia Mary HARTLAND

1Newspaper Obituary, Leader (Orange, NSW) Mon 14 Feb 1938.
"WOMEN PIONEERS PASS.
Neighbors for Generations.
Within two hours of one another, two of the best-known pioneers of Orange died on Friday night. They were Mrs. Charles Lapham (68), who was born and died in the same house in Byng Street, and Mrs. Mary Ann Waine, aged 77, whose family history in the district also dates back in the earliest mining days of the West.
MRS. CHARLES HENRY LAPHAM.
A member of the famous mining family of Hartlands, the father of whom was one of the principal figures in the opening of Ophir as the first payable fields in Australia, Mrs. Lapham had probably resided in Orange longer than any other contemporary resident. She never wanted to leave her family's original homestead, and it was there that she died. Mr. Hartland, sen., who died only a few years ago, was one of the first miners at Lucknow also. His name is coupled with the memory at such well-known figures at Henry Newman, former member for the district, and James Dalton. Mrs. Lapham was married in Orange, and there were sixteen children. Those who live to mourn their loss are her husband, Charles Henry Lapham, 68 years; and sons and daughters, Oscar, 48 (Woollahra, Sydney), Henry Charles, 45, Linda (Mrs. McFarlane, Haberfield, Sydney), Wallace, 37, Herbert, 35, Phillip, 33 (Narrabri), Eva, 32 (Mrs. L. Garrick, Campsie, Sydney), Allan 29, Ina 27 (Mrs. C. Eslick, Orange), Norman 24, and a sister, Mrs. F. Spratt (Griffith). Three sons and three daughters predeceased their mother. There are numerous grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. The funeral, which took place on Saturday afternoon, was very largely at- tended, Mrs. Lapham's lifetime in Orange having won for her many friends and admirers. The remains were interred in the Methodist portion of the Orange cemetery."

Cyril Turner BRAYNE

1Newspaper Obituary.
"On Wednesday, October 30, the death occurred of Cyril Turner Brayne who had been a resident of Griffith district for more than half a century. After a service at the Anglican Church of St. Alban the Martyr, the cortege formed, and the remains were interred in the lawn section of Griffith Cemetery.
The pall-bearers were Don Simpson, Lindsay Gain, Robert Parsons, William Rose, John Robinson and Russell Linabury, all of whom represented the several Masonic orders to which Cyril had belonged. Cyril is survived by his wife, Edna, sons Alan, now of Melbourne, Rodney still living in Griffith, and two daughters Elva, (Mrs.) Lin Hemley) of Gosford district and Thurley (Mrs. George Fowler) of Melbourne and their families.
The late Cyril Brayne enlisted in the A.I.F. First World War at a very early age and was just 19 when he served on Gallipoli. He served throughout the war and shortly after returning he married Miss Edna Spratt.
With two very young children the Braynes first came to Griffith in the early 1920s.
For some time Cyril engaged in the building trade, but later took up a fruit farm on the western side of Griffith. Together with all other settlers of that period life was not easy during the depression, but with hard work, stout hearts, and great courage the family won through and later enjoyed better times. Some few years ago Cyril and his wife gave up the farm and came to live in Konoa Street, Griffith. Although of a retiring nature, and never one to seek limelight or glory, Cyril had a circle of friends who held him and his wife in the highest esteem.
Always a generous couple, they kept open house for any friends who wished to visit them. Cyril was a valued member of several Masonic orders in some of which he gained very high honours.
A loving and beloved husband, father and grandfather, true and loyal friend, Cyril's memory will always be cherished by those who were privileged to know him well."
