343. Rev James GLENDINNING

1Newspaper Obituary, Edinburgh Evening News 21 Feb 1896.
"Edinburgh Evening News
Death of a retired Border Minister. The death occurred at his residence, St Andrew's Cottage Lockerbie, last night, of the Rev James Glendinning. Deceased studied for the ministry at Glasgow University and for a time was pastor of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, at Dunscore. He afterwards joined the Free Church. He was minister of Ecclefechan until 1873, and has since resided at Lockerbie.
Aberdeen Journal
Death of a Dumfriesshire Minister. - Rev James Glendinning died yesterday morning from diphtheria, to which his youngest son also succumbed a fortnight ago. Mr Glendinning, was a native of Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire. He was for a considerable period minister of the Free Church, Ecclefechan, and was an acceptable preacher. For the last twenty years he had farmed Over Cassock, in Eskdalemuir, but was constatnly of late years engaged in preaching as supply. Mr Glendinning was over 60 years of age."
Also Aberdeen Journal 22 Feb 1896.

2Newspaper Obituary, Eskdale & Liddesdale Advertiser 26 Feb 1896.
"THE LATE REV. JAMES GLENDINNING. - On Friday last the Rev. James Glendinning, who had for many years been in feeble health, died somewhat suddenly at his residence in Lockerbie. Only a fortnight before he had buried his youngest child, a boy of from four to five years old, and there is no doubt that the shock received by that event, combined with his own precarious condition, would materially help to hasten his own death. Mr Glendinning was a well-known man throughout the whole county of Dumfries, as well as in other parts of the country. Born in Eskdalemuir, be received his early education in his native parish, from which he proceeded to the university, where he studied with a view to the ministry in the Reformed Presbyterian Church. After labouring for some time in connection with that denomination in Dundee, he joined the Free Church, thus anticipating the union that took place between the two churches in 1876. He was afterwards called to be minister of the Free Church at Ecclefechan, where he continued to labour with much acceptance for several years. Certain events occurring which rendered it necessary for him to leave Ecclefechan, he retired to his farm at Over Cassock, where he spent many years as a sheep farmer. During those years of retirement from the ministry he lived a quiet and useful life, and by his unobtrusive and genuine piety commanded the esteem of all who knew him. Latterly he and his family took up their residence in Lockerbie. arid while living there he was frequently employed in supplying pulpits. As a preacher Mr Glendinning was unquestionably above the average. He belonged to what is somewhat disparagingly called the old schoo1 of preachers, but which, we believe, is destined to survive any of the "Gospels of Yesterday." His doctrinal system was that of the Puritan divines, with whose writings he was widely and deeply conversant, and whose evangelical spirit pervaded all his pulpit ministrations. Deeply imbued with the spirit of the old theology he cared little about modern speculations in religious matters, whether these had reference to the connection between science and theology, or to purely biblical criticisms. He had no doubts, no misgivings, no heart-struggles with regard to the great verities of the Christian faith, but accepted these in all simplicity and honesty of heart. The old truths and doctrines of religion were to him sufficient. They formed the very texture of his mind, the sum and substance of his thoughts and designs, and entered into his very innermost soul, as iron enters into the blood. His faith was simple, childlike, unquestioning. and unassailable as a rock. With the old evangelical faith he was content to live, and with it be was content to die. His well-known, picturesque figure has now disappeared; and by those who have the true spiritual vision and feeling, and who see more in life. than what is material and visible, the world will be felt to be so much poorer than it was before. He was twice married, and by his first wife, who was a native of Dunscore, he had a son, who is now a farmer in Australia. He is survived by his second wife (who is a daughter of Mr Henderson, Hazelbank, Johnstone), and a large family of sons and daughters. His remains were interred on Monday last, in the family burying-ground at Westerkirk."
Note this obituary says "he had a son, who is now a farmer in Australia". This is incorrect. His son James Archibald Glendinning was a farmer in Texas, USA.

2Newspaper Obituary, The Press Sat 12 Sep 1925.
"Mr Archibald McAdam, late of Stonyhurst, who died recently in Christchurch, was very well-known and highly respected throughout North Canterbury. He was born 62 years ago in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, and came to New Zealand when quite a young man. After a few years of general work for Sir George Clifford Mr McAdam became manager of the estate at Stonyhurst, a position which he held for 33 years.. Mr McAdam took a keen interest in his vofk, the duties of his responsible position being carried out capably and conscientiously. The relationship between the late Mr McAdam and his employer, Sir George Clifford, was of the happiest character, a friendship being maintained unbroken and unclouded all through the years. In consequence .of failing health a trip was taken by Mr and Mrs McAdam in 1911 to the.Old Country, the Continent, and America. Four years ago, however, Mr McAdam broke down in health, entirely, and had since then been practically an invalid. On his retirement handsome recognition was made by the employees of Stonyhurst of Mr and Mrs McAdam's character and services. Of a cheerful and generous disposition, very staunch and loyal in his friendship, the late Mr McAdam was a man whom it was good to know, and he will be much missed by a wide circle of friends. In 1903 Mr McAdam married Miss Thompson, of Glen Lea, Amberley, who survives him. Mrs McAdam was well-known at Stonyhurst for her kindness and hospitality. The Rev J W. Hayward conducted the funeral service at Balcairn, and a large number of beautiful wreaths testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held.
In connexion with the long and honourable record of service of the late Mr McAdam at Stonyhurst, it is interesting to recall that his father held the Highland and Agricultural Society’s medal for 50 years' service in the employ of Messrs Macmillan, Glencrosh, Scotland."

4Newspaper, The Press (New Zealand) Fri 10 March 1922.
"A very pleasant function took place at Sir George Clifford's station, "Stonyhurst," this week, when employees presented Mr Archibald McAdam, the manager, with a beautiful leather suit case and a travelling coat, and Mrs McAdam with a handsome gold bangle. Reference was made to the very high esteem in which the recipients were held by the employees, and to the sound advice that had alwasy been given by Mr McAdam during his management, extending over a period of 33 years, and to the many kindnesses shown by Mrs McAdam. Mr McAdam suitably replied, and referred to the co-operation and good friendship that had always existed among the station hands, and thanked the subscribers on behalf of his wife and himself for their very handsome presents."
