3Newspaper Obituary, Southern Reporter 21 Feb 1935.
"NOTED JOURNALIST'S DEATH. - By the death of Mr John Grant, aged 58 years, one of the ablest and most highly respected journalists in the Borders has passed away. He had been ill for 2 year. While reporting the Gala v. Selkirk match at Netherdale he collapsed at the press table. Since then he had carried on his duties, pluckily fighting against weakness, with the co-operation of his son, Mr Adam S. Grant. Mr Grant was an accurate and skilful journalist, and possessed remarkable local knowledge. In 1896 he succeeded his grandfather as Galashiels correspondent of "The Scotsman" and "The Southern Reporter." So between them they held this connection unbroken for over seventy years. He was a member of the Institute of Journalists, and represented many of the leading Scottish and English newspapers. Mr Grant was highly intelligent, with a fine sense of humour, and that, and his courteous, kindly ways, endeared him not only to fellow journalists but to the public. He had a fine spirit, which was manifest by the brave manner in which he faced the fall of life's twilight. In his younger days Mr Grant was a member of the Border Rifle Volunteers. During the war he was joint secretary of the Galashiels Soldiers' Comforts Fund, and he was secretary of the Incorporated Soldiers' and Sailors' Help Society. He was presented with a diploma for his services. Mr Grant assisted in the drawing up of the Galashiels Roll of Honour, and was a member of the Committee responsible for the erection of the War Memorial. He was prominently identified with the establishment of the Galashiels Ex-Servicemen's Club, and also rendered good publicity service in connection with the promotion of the Braw Lads' Gathering. For some years he was session clerk of Ladhope Parish Churen. Deep sympathy is extended to his widow and their two sons and two daughters. The popular esteem in which he was held was evidenced by the large and representative attendance at the funeral which took place to Eastlands Cemetery yesterday afternoon."
