2Newspaper Obituary, Perthshire Courier 5 Mar 1840.
"Died at Pulna, near Dunkeld, on the first instant, Mr John Crerar, formerly principal gamekeeper to the late Duke of Athole, at the advanced age of 90. Mr Crerar, it may be said, was born in the service of the Athole family ; his father in the like capacity served Duke James, and afterwards John the third Duke; and while in the service of James in the year 1745, the elder brother of the Duke having been attainted and in exile, returned and took possession of his patrimonial estates and titles, so that old Crerar for a short time served Duke William also. He too had the honour of attending the chivalrous Prince Charlie on a grouse shooting excursion in the Athole moors, while on his march to the Lowlands. On the accession of the late Duke John, then a young man, young Crerar became his constant attendant in all his out door sports, and during the long life of his Grace he continued the inseparable " Etat major" of all his movements on mountain and moor, on flood and field ; and as such was honoured by being portrayed on the same canvass with his noble master in Landeeer's inimitable painting of the Duke as a "deer-stalker," where Mr Crerar, now "old Crerar," is represented as leaning against a piece of rock with his prospect at his eye, on the lookout for the herd. On the death of his Grace, Mr Crerar was amply provided for in his will, and since that period, the evening of his life has been cheered by the most assiduous attentions of her Grace the Duchess, and every other member of the ducal family. Until within a short time of his death Mr Crerar was a living chronicle of all the distinguished visitors of the family for three-quarters of a century with many of the great he had been familiar in the moors, amongst these the late King of France, Lord Melville, the Marquis of Hastings, Mr Sheridan, Mr Huskisson, Fintry Graham, &c., long since departed, and Lord Lynedoch, still alive, were not the least famous. Through life Mr Crerar had adopted as his rule of conduct, a golden one to those about the great, vit., "To meddle with no person's business but his own," and he experienced the good result in the respect of his superiors, and the good will of his fellow servants. — "Requiescut in Pace."."

3Newspaper Obituary, Belfast Commercial Chronicle 14 Mar 1840.
