3Newspaper Obituary, Eskdale & Liddesdale Advertiser - 1 Dec 1880.
"The Late Charles Crerar
We regret to have to record the death of Mr Charles Crerar, Holmhead, who had reached the advanced age of fourscore years. For some time past Mr Crerar has been in indifferent health, but it was only within the past month or two that he was confined to the house. Mr Crerar was a native of Perthshire, and was born in the year 1800. He went into the service of John, fourth Duke of Athole, when quite a boy, and remained with him till the Duke of Buccleuch rented Athole Deer Forest in 1834, since which time he has remained in the employment of the latter. On the Duke relinquishing the tenancy of Athole Forest in 1839 the deceased came to Langholm as head keeper, in which position he has continued faithfully to discharge his duties with the utmost satisfaction to all with whom he came in contact for the last forty-one years. His relations with the tenentry were always of the most cordial character, and in the delicate position which he osccupied between landlord and tenant, this gratifying fact speaks volumes for his character. The high respect in which the deceased was held was shown by the recent special visit of the Duke of Buccleuch to see him. Mr and Mrs Crerar completed the fiftieth year of their married life in Octobber 1877, and in the following March their numerous friends in this district presented them, as a mark of their high regard, with a silver jug and a purse of fifty soveriegns. Mrs Crerar died on 13th May 1879, and she and her husband are survived by a son and three daughters. Mr Crerar belongs to a long-lived family, his father, who was principal gamekeeper to the Duke of Athole, having died in 1840 at the age of 90 years. Father and son seem to have been gifted with many of the same good qualities, as the following interesting notice of Crerar the elder, taken from the Perthshire Courier of March 5, 1840, may serve to show:- [see John Crerar citations for this]."

4Newspaper Obituary, Dundee Courier 3 Dec 1880.
"Death of a Perthshire Man - Mr Charles Crerar, for forty one years head keeper to the Duke of Buccleuch, died at Holmhead, Langholm, on Tuesday. He was a native of Perthshire, and in his 81st year. The Duke a few eeks ago paid a special visit to see him, and he was very highly respected throughout the district. Two years ago, on the occasion of his golden wedding, he was presented by the inhabitants of the district with a silver jug and purse of 50 sovereigns."
