891. Leon Stewart TUTTLE

1Newspaper Obituary, Stamford Advocate 27/28 Dec 2014.
"Tuttle, (Leon) Stewart
A good man died a year ago on December 29, 2013. Stewart grew up Stamford, CT, the eldest son of Leon & Ethel Tuttle, brother of Larry, husband of Dorothy, father of Cheryl, and grandfather of Cristine, He passed away during the early hours at home in Anderson South Carolina from cancer. Stewart's conviction was to be an honest kindly gentle man; he succeeded. He grew up playing football and was an avid NY Giants fan. In 1943, he joined the Navy where he proudly served in the Pacific Theatre on the USS Freestone; he drove a landing craft that ferried soldiers to shore. His ship docked at Nagasaki shortly after the atomic bomb was dropped on that city. After his military service, he apprenticed as a len's grinder for an optician. He obtained his opticians license and eventually bought New Canaan Optician; he retired in 1995. He met the love of his life, Dorothy Mazza upon his return from the Navy. Stewart and Dorothy shared a good life together, until Dorothy's passing in 2008. I have fond memories of our family vacations at the lake in Canada with my cousins and winter vacations in Florida with my grandparents. I have such fond memories of family and friends gathering over the years. My father is of a generation of men that is passing. A generation that stayed married, that stayed at their jobs, that were committed. We will miss you. His favorite charity was Paralyzed Veterans of America."

Dorothy Marie MAZZA

1Newspaper Obituary, Stamford Advocate and Greenwich Time27 Jan 2008.
"DOROTHY MARIE MAZZA TUTTLE
a 79 year-old recent resident of Tijeras, NM and a life-long resident of Stamford, Connecticut passed on due to declining health on January 22, 2008 in Albuquerque, NM. Her devoted husband of 61 years, (Leon) Stewart Tuttle held her hand as she left this life. Her daughter, Cheryl Ann Tuttle and her husband, Ponch C. Hall (all of Tijeras) were also at her bedside. Her granddaughter, Cristine Lee Tuttle, NP/MPH, who resides and works in Manhattan, New York, flew in to be with her family. Cristine spent many hours visiting her grandmother in Stamford and often acted as her healthcare advocate. Dorothy grew up in the Shippan area of Stamford, Connecticut with her older brother, Vincent J. Mazza (deceased and survived by his wife, Anna M. Scipioni Mazza) and a younger sister, Marion Ciarelli (wife of John) of Southbury, Connecticut. Their parents, John Dominick Mazza and Mary Agnes Chiarelli are deceased. Dorothy and Stewart were introduced through a mutual friend shortly after Stewart's return from a distinguished Naval Service aboard the USS Freestone in the Pacific during World War II. They eloped to Elkin Maryland on March 27, 1947 and later married at Sacred Heart Church in Stamford. Their life together was passionate and filled with adventures of everyday life. Dorothy was a devoted homemaker and mother. Stewart built a successful optical business in New Canaan, Connecticut and retired in 1992. Dorothy loved entertaining, and her home was often filled with neighborhood children or with family and friends. Dorothy's favorite pet was a Siamese cat named Shelly for whom she prepared lushe liver dinners, even though Stewart and Cheryl did not share Shelly's fondness for liver. Although Dorothy returned to her Catholic roots towards the end of her life, she requested cremation followed by a memorial service at a funeral home. In the future, Dorothy and Stewart's ashes will be co-mingled and scattered at Shippan Point, Stamford Connecticut. Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 26, 2008, 3:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice."
