William D. English, 78, a retired research chemist and pioneer in the field of cryogenics, died Dec. 5 after a long illness. English, a native of Canada, was educated at the University of Manitoba and McGill University. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1952 and earned a Ph.D. at Pennsylvania State University before beginning a career of research centered largely on fluorine chemistry. In 1956 he moved to Southern California, working first at U.S. Borax, later Astropower and McDonnell Douglas Corporations. English also edited Cryogenic Technology, a journal focusing on the chemistry of extremely low temperatures, and consulted for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). In 1975 English joined TRW Corp., where he pioneered use of solid-fuel propellants for both chemical lasers and automotive air bags. He was also an avid philatelist and volunteer in both amateur ice hockey and Junior Achievement. He retired in 1994, and is survived by his wife, Madeline, and children, Patricia, Robert and Randall. A private service was held."
