5027. Charles David FARQUHAR

1Newspaper, Otago Daily Times 9 Dec 1935.
"TWO MEN DROWNED ONE BODY RECOVERED Two drowning fatalities, one near Balclutha and the other in the Pomahaka River, occurred yesterday afternoon, the victims in both cases being young men.
They were:
Charles David Farquhar, a single man, aged 24 years, who resided at Te Houka.
Owen Dall, 25 years of age, a farm labourer in the employ of Mr L. Lindsay, of Waikoikoi.
Together with his two brothers and two other men, Mr Farquhar had gone rabbit-shooting, and shortly after 3 o'clock they decided to go for a bathe in a backwater of the Clutha River, about a mile and a-half from Balclutha. Shortly after they entered the water the deceased got out of his depth and was seen by his companions to sink. An attempt was made to rescue him, but as none of the party could swim, this proved fruitless, and assistance was summoned from an adjacent farm. The water in the vicinity where the deceased was last seen was between 16 and 20 feet deep, which made dragging operations difficult, and although every effort was made to locate the body, it had not been recovered by last night.
Mr Dall, with three companions, was swimming in the Pomahaka River, near Pomahaka, shortly before 3 o'clock, when he was seized with cramp and sank instantly. Two of the men who were with him attempted to reach him, but were unsuccessful, and it was not until 6.30, with the aid of drags, that the body was recovered."
