2Newspaper Announcement, Dundee Evening Post 14 Feb 1901.
"The death took place this morning, at his farm Milnholm near Langholm, of John Calvert Carlyle, nephew of the Chelsea Sage, with whom he was exceedingly intimate.
Mr John Carlyle's father was Mr James Carlyle, brother of the great author, and tenant of the famous farm Scotsbrig, which Carlyle so frequently visited. Mr John Carlyle inherited his uncle's literary taste, and was an authority on Shakespeare, Burns, &c."

3Newspaper, Dundee Evening Post 16 Feb 1901.
"John Calvert Carlyle, nephew of the late Sage of Chelsea, who died this week, had many interesting reminiscences of his distinguished uncle. Here is one:- " When Carlyle was on old man - about eighty - and paid as it turned out, his last visit to Scotsbrig, his nephew was driving him about as usual, and they came to a hill which Carlyle liked to ascend and see the view from. It was not a high one, and they fastened the horse near the foot, and went up together. After looking round at the well-beloved, familiar scene, Carlyle quietly descended, but when they reached the bottom he said, "John, let us go up again; it will be the last time." Quietly the old man plodded his way up again to behold the familiar landscape, and it proved, indeed, the last time."
